What You Should Do After Lasik Eye Surgery

Generally, lasik eye surgery is relatively a safe procedure. The degree and rate of recovery will depend on your how you religiously follow your eye doctor’s postoperative instructions. While it is rare for infection to develop after the procedure, it is still much safer to not let your guard down and to take as many preventive measures as possible.

Some of these measures may cause inconvenience in your part but it is quite practical to slow down for a few weeks to ensure complete recovery of your eyes otherwise you are risking permanent vision problem should you not be careful after your lasik surgery.

Since the eyes are more vulnerable after the surgery, it is important to keep your eyes protected from any possible source of infection and/or other factors that may slow down your recovery period.

It is necessary for you to wear protective eye gear or goggle when you are sleeping to keep materials entering your eyes and to prevent yourself from poking or rubbing your eyes unintentionally. Because your hands contain many pathogens from touching different things and surfaces, be very conscious to keep you hands away from your eyes.

Try to wash your hands multiple times a day to lessen the possibility of infection should you unconsciously touch your eyes with your hands. Do not put facial lotions or any chemical in your face after the eye surgery and if possible try not to put anything at all in your face to avoid eye infection.

Just relax and close your eyes in the first 24 hours of lasik surgery then your can do light duties like reading, watching TV, or working on the computer. Activities like jogging, playing, or working on household chores are only allowed after a few days after surgery but great precautions should still be taken while doing these activities. Seek your eye surgeon’s advice should you want to do more strenuous activities. Swimming and bath tubs are not allowed. You can take a bath but make sure that no water or soap will enter your eyes.

So generally just take it easy in a few days after the surgery. This way you can have a fast recovery. Take the postoperative instructions seriously and you will recovery uneventfully and be able to go back to normal activities as soon as possible. Contact your eye surgeon immediately should you develop irritation and/or infection on the operated eye.
